Scottie Frequently Asked Questions
Here are some frequently asked questions and their answers. If the questions you have aren’t addressed here, please don’t hesitate to ask.
Q.What are the prices of your puppies?
A.Our puppies are $800.00 for a pet with a limited registration. We do sometimes sell a puppy with a full registration depending on the intentions and knowledge of the buyer. The price for a fully registered puppy is $1200.00.
Q.What colors do you usually have?
A.All our Scotties carry the wheaten gene, so we can have blacks, brindle or wheatens in any litter.
Q.What size are you Scotties?
A.We breed our Scotties to the AKC standard which lists the size of Scotties at 10 inches at the shoulder and weight between 18-23 lbs.
Q.Can we put a deposit on a puppy?
A.We don’t take deposits for puppies that aren’t born yet. We have never felt that was fair. We can, however, put your name on our waiting list and call you when we do have a puppy available for you.
We require a $300.00 deposit to hold a puppy that is already born. Please be sure you are ready for a puppy as deposits aren’t refundable in most circumstances.
Q.Do you ship?
A.Yes. We have been shipping Scotties for over 30 years and have not had any problems. The shipping charges are the buyers and we will find the best, fastest, most economical flight for your puppy. Every precaution is taken to insure that your puppy arrives safely.
Q.Do your puppies have any shots when you let them go to their new homes?
A.Our puppies receive 2 “Puppy Shots” before they leave here at 8 weeks of age. They have also been wormed twice. We will provide a health record for you to take to your vet when you go for your Puppy Check so your vet knows what shots your puppy has had and can schedule the rest of his or her needed shots.
Q.Do you provide a guarantee?
A.Yes. Click on the Guarantee Link to read it. We think you will find it to be the best one out there. All our Scotties are VWD, Scottie Cramp, CMO, and Dermititis free. We want your experience of buying a Scottie puppy to be a wonderful one. We have many return clients that have bought 2, 3 and even 4 Scotties from us over the years. We love return customers!
Q.Where are your puppies raised?
A.Our puppies are whelped and raised in our family room. This way we can hear and respond to any puppy in distress. Weather permitting, we take them outside every day to play after the age of 6 weeks. We pick up our puppies and talk to them and massage them every day starting as soon as they are born. Scottie puppies really benefit from early socialization. By keeping them in our family room, they are exposed to the sights, sounds and smells of a typical household.
Q.Where are your adult Scotties kept?
A.We do have a brand new, beautiful kennel with outside runs, as well as a large play yard, where our adult Scotties stay. As soon as one of our females is bred, she is brought into the house to hang out with us until she whelps. We live on 57 acres on a mountain and our Scotties get out every day (weather permitting) and run, play and chase, squirrels and chipmunks. No shortage of exercise here! Our children are all grown and gone, so our days are spent with our dogs and dog related activities. We would be so bored and lonely without them!
Q.Are there any books that you recommend about training?
A. Anything by Cesar Milan the “Dog Whisperer”. His approach works very well with Scotties. They can at times be a little stubborn so you must be the “Leader of the Pack”. We also love the books by The Monks of New Skete. They have a wonderful approach to training as well. We also recommend obedience classes for your puppy after they have had all their shots. A well trained Scottie makes the best companion.
Q.How do you recommend we housebreak our puppy?
A.We are big believers in crate training. Consistency is the key to housebreaking your Scottie. We include a crate training guide with your paperwork when you receive you puppy.
Q.Are your Scotties registered?
A.All our Scotties are registered with the American Kennel Club.
Q.What are you thoughts on spaying and neutering?
A.Spaying your female puppy before her first estrus cycle is the best way to increase your Scotties’ chances of a healthy, happy, long life. The “heat” cycle of a female dog is very messy and unwanted pregnancies with the neighbors mixed breed male can happen in an instant. Spaying also reduces the risk of breast cancer and totally eliminates the chance of uterine and ovarian cancers. Neutering your male puppy early in his life makes him less aggressive toward other dogs and keeps him closer to home. Neutered males are also less likely to “mark”. It can also prevent prostate problems later in life and eliminates testicular cancer.
Q.What are your Scotties personalities like?
A.All our Scotties have exceptional personalities and excellent temperaments. We have worked very hard for over 30 years to breed friendly, funny, sweet, good looking Scotties. We would never breed a Scottie with a “nasty” temperament.
